William Martin

William Martin paints in the classical tradition of the Great Masters using techniques all but lost to the modern artist.
Martin was born in Mexico City in 1953. His childhood was filled with travels throughout Mexico where he absorbed the local culture as well as that of the French and Spanish who occupied the country for many years.
During his early years, Martin’s family moved to California where he began painting with oils. At age twenty, he apprenticed under a local artist and found himself instructing his own students after a few short months. After twenty years of teaching and growing as an artist, Martin is very dedicated to art and strongly believes in sharing his knowledge.
Martin’s work seeks to captivate with rich colorings and textures of exotic woods,antique fabrics, delicately cut crystal, dazzling arrays of fresh fruit and flowers along with polished copper and silver. Martin tempts his viewer to pick a grape, caress an inviting fabric, or bend to smell a rose. The sensuous objects in his compositions recede and emerge, pulling the viewer into his warm universe of shadows and light. To achieve this effect, Martin employs “glazing techniques” which originated in the 15th century. Involved is layer upon layer of transparent paints over splashes of color that comprise the under painting. Martin creates a different world, a soothing and mysterious refuge where objects somehow become more than they are.
“Still life is getting out of the world around you , and into a world of your own.” Martin’s vision creates a pristine world. “We’d all like to live in a world where everything is a little more beautiful than it is.”
